Representation in Media

Representation is how media text deals with and presents gender, age, ethnicity, national and regional identity, social issues and events to an audience.

The analysis of different sorts of representation forms an important part of Media Studies.

-Gender

Typically masculine- Tough, Hard, Sweaty.

Typically feminine- Fragile, Soft, Fragrant.

-Race

Ethnicity and color, like sex, comprise sets of genetically defined, biological characteristics. However, as with gender, there are also cultural elements in those defining characteristics.

-Age

Young-Immature, stupid, greedy, lazy, selfish, unfit, and obese.

Old- Grumpy, outdated, slow, weak, whining, unable to use technology, and unhealthy.

-Disability
